90 / Ack Van Rooyen

Ack Van Rooyen

publication date: 23 Apr 2021
He is 90 years old, but not a bit quieter. The Dutch master trumpeter and flugelhorn specialist Ack Van Rooyen has recorded a new album on the occasion of his birthday. And with a top cast: Paul Heller (ts), Hubert Nuss (p), Ingmar Heller (b), Peter Tiehus (g) and Hans Dekker (dr).

Play Spiel me a note and I'll tell you who you are. It is often the individual, the "own sound" of an instrumentalist that gives it away - and not only in blindfold tests in which recordings are played to musicians according to the motto "Listen, who is playing?"

Ack Van Rooyen also makes it easy for the normal jazz listener. Its sound is so distinctive that it only takes a few seconds, fewer tones, to identify it. A sound full of warmth and a touch of melancholy - something that, by the way, also characterizes Ack Van Rooyen, who turned 90 last year and celebrated his birthday with this production!

90 “presents a bi-national sextet - with three musicians each from the Netherlands and Germany. In addition to the lead tenor saxophonist Paul Heller, guitarist Peter Tiehuis, pianist Hubert Nuss, Ingmar Heller on bass and drummer Hans Dekker will play.

A wonderful jazz album with Ack Van Rooyen in top form!
